I've got news for you: pigs are easy, deer are hard. You just have to be out a lot like us.

I beg to differ, blacktail are easy, pigs are the spawn of satan. 'Course, if you hold out for a wallhanger each season, you'll develop a taste for tag soup.

Having said that, I'll probably get skunked this year!:lol bashing sign:

I beg to differ, blacktail are easy (gotta think like 'em), pig on the other hand, are the spawn of Satan.

'Course, if you hold out for a wall hanger every season, you'll develop a taste for tag soup. I don't always fill both tags, but I've only ate my tags once and I didn't like it.

Having just said that, I'll probably get skunked this year!:lol bashing sign:

well thats a bummer..

but in retrospect, I'm glad there ARE places that are limited to active duty and those that made a career out of it.

:patiotic-wavin-flag

I'll just enjoy the great posts here then. Thanks

Paul

Paul,

Fort Hunter Liggett is open to the public, I went up to scout elk over the 4th and there were many, many, many good looking deer there. Some of the healthiest blacktails I've ever seen were there.

If VAFB wasn't open to me, I certainly drive the extra two hours to go there.

If it had been rifle season (or bow for that matter) I'm fairly certain I'd have filled my tag the first day. Give that a try!

Dan: when you come out we'll try to get you on some hogs, okay? Although the general season is just about the worst time to find 'em.

I agree the general season is the worst time. How about a glass of ice tea and 1/2 hour discussion with maps?

Alright, for those wondering about being authorized to hunt on VAFB, here's the paragraph from the new reg dated 1 July 2009:

5.3. Persons authorized to hunt on VAFB, including basic conditions for such authorization:

5.3.1. Active duty, retired, and reserve military members; and prior active duty members and family members of active duty and retired military members who possess appilicable service identification cards as defined in AFI 36-3026(1), Identification Cards for Members of the Uniformed Services, Their Eligible Family Mambers, and Other Eligible Personnel, Chumash Tribal Members, DoD Civilian employees (includes AAFES and NAF), state and federal employees authorized by 30 SW/CC, and retired civil service.

5.3.1.1. Only acitve duty and retired military members may escort one (1) civilian guest to hunt on VAFB. The civilian guest must be a United States citizen and cleared by background check prior to hunting on the installation pursuant to 30 SWI 31-101, Installation Security Instruction.

5.3.1.1.1. The escort will be responsible for the guest at all times while on the installation and must ensure the guest has all appropriate documentation required to be on the installation and to hunt.

5.3.1.1.2. The escort must be within both visual and verbal contact with the guest.

Now, if you still have questions regarding eligibility or G-11 tags, call the VAFB Conservation Office M - F, 0800 to 1600 at 805-606-6804. They are the authors & enforcers of this regulation and can answer your questions.

Under 5.3.1...Can anyone clarify what State and Federal Employees by 30 SW/CC is???? I'm a Federal Employee, but not sure if I qualify....

30 SW/CC: translation-- 30th Space Wing Commander (the wing commander is the big kahuna on base)

So, you have to submit a letter from your command authority to him and if he approves it, you're in! If not, well, see you at FHL.

Hell, I can do better than that! How about dinner at my place and we'll look it over with beers in hand!

Thats mighty generous, I might take you up on that offer, but I'd hate to impose. For some reason, this year most of our world weary travelers are back, so we'll have quite the deer camp going this year. Last count it was 6 of us, from 2 states and 2 countries. I may need a break one night, 'cause I am NOT gonna skin and butcher all those deer.If not, I'd be happy to buy you a beer anyway. Maybe its not the maps so much as the techinque/timing. Remember my comment about thinking like a deer makes it easy for me? I just don't know the pig habits, or maybe just haven't studied them enough. Don't what it is, but it keeps me coming back.

Whatever works for you. I'm easy.

By the way, Phil passed away over the weekend. I guess it was a blessing: he was in a lot of pain.

Thanks. I was looking into FHL anywhoo so I'll devote the time there. Doesn’t mean I won't live vicariously through all of the VAFB posts though.. :)
