The biggest issue for a vehicle in May will be ground clearance... much moreso than 4wd. The roads should be plenty dry by then. There are still some steep places, and if the dust is thick it can get a little slippery...
Speckmisser,
I emailed you about three weeks ago for two applications. Did you get the email? I clicked on your screen name and select "Send email to Speckmisser."
I just did a private hunt on Tejon north this past weekend. It was my first pig hunt and I'm hooked. The roads aren't too bad except for the high areas and the north facing roads which either have snow on them or part of the embankment has slid down and covered the road with mud. We came across a couple spots which would have taken too much of our time to dig through. 4 wheel drive definately came in handy though. There are a couple of roads which cross creeks, and 4x is a must for those.
If you haven't been there before, its an amazing place. We saw a large bobcat driving in within the first 5 minutes. Dozens of deer, and about 30 Elk. Unfortunately for us, the pigs were scarce that weekend. I got a shot off at 2 pigs and missed. Its been a while since I've been hunting, so I guess I'm a little rusty. Out of 7 guys only 2 of us were able to kill.
The first day I saw 3 pigs breifly. The second day I saw 5 during the day, then just after dark 5 darted across the road in front of us. I got off a shot at them, but it was tough to see. The third day we kicked up 3 heading up the hill just before sunup. I should have knocked one down then, but I need more practice shooting at a moving target. You wouldn't think they could move so fast with such short legs, but they do.
The pigs are definately there, I just think they are spread out everywhere because of the abundance of water.
getting ready to send mine in. Anybody from El centro or San diego area doing this hunt want to drive up with me? At this time i'm driving alone in the truck. LMK
Input needed! Had not thought of taking my 13yr old on this hunt, not knowing anybody and feeling like a greenhorn. Would he fit in, he has Dove experience and like dad no luck in turkey bow hunting yet. What say you? At least it would make my drive from El Centro less lonely
That sign meaning "Watch Out." He usually throws one of those story to get your mind cooking and at the end tells you it's that day. Let's see what ya got this year Speck? I'm ready to read. ;-)
Dangit, L2H... you headed me off at the pass on that one! Totally derailed today's post.
CrapsVC, you'd be the best judge as to how well your kid will fit in with the crowd. Safety is the only concern... if he's a safe hunter, he's welcome aboard.
We've had a few youth hunters, and it looks like there will be several on this trip. I'll be hosting one myself.
This trip is gettin closer. Anyboy lookin to carpool, let me know. I will be rollin from Reno, NV. Either shoot down 395 or the 5, not sure yet. I'm thinkin of heading out Thursday (05/13) and grabing a room in the Gorman area. Gotta be at the Flying J early for Friday morning breakfast! Will have the GMC loaded up with gear and Polaris Ranger in tow....
Just a note here... from where I'm sitting, there are only a shade over 2 weeks to the deadline, and while I'm hearing a lot of folks saying they're in, I've only received a couple of paid-up apps.
I also have a small handful of apps going out in the mail to those of you who've just requested them. It's getting close!
Would it be possible to post a running total of everyone who's app you have received or a PM maybe? Just want to be sure I sent it to the right place. My first time and all...
