Just seen the weather report for Tejon and it looks like rain\snow mix for the entire weekend.
If you plan on bringing your 4x4 make sure you have chains. The mud at Tejon is like no other mud I've ever experienced.
You can lose your vehicle (and your life) from sliding down a hill. I think having a winch is almost mandatory at Tejon.

If you get enough snow it should be easier to move around.

Bring your warm gear, looks like high 20's for the low and low 40's for high. Should be good hunting though.

Promises to be a wild weekend, Rich... I've definitely been keeping my eye on things down there.

I'll second the recommendation to bring chains and self-recovery gear. I have a winch and a two ton come-along.

I think most of the folks coming on this one are Tejon veterans, but I don't know who has been there for bad weather. There are plenty of good spots accessible from the lower ground and good roads, so please keep in mind that you don't have to put yourself in danger up there. Might have to hike a little more, but that's better than calling in the helicopters to pluck your vehicle (or your carcass) out of a ravine.

The .325 is shooting dead on, and the new Barnes loads for the .44mag are pretty impressive too. I'm ready for a hog!

I remember taking my brand new 4x4 to tejon and needing help getting it out of a precarious situation. We upgraded our old 4cyl. jeep to a slightly newer 6 cyl. model. We fitted all four tires with chains over the weekend just in case the ground is snotty.

That .325 should easily take care of your hog with one shot. Good luck on your hunt..... bring some extra socks

I'm not going to make the hunt but should be there for breakfast. BTW.....if anyone shoots a hog with decent cutters and DOESN'T want the skull for themselves I need it. I will pay shipping or arrange to pick it up at the ranch.

It's almost time!
<

Just a couple of reminders.
  • First, remember to bring the additional $50 to the check-in on Friday. Cash or checks only please, as Barbara doesn't take MasterCard, Visa, or American Express.
  • Second, remember no lead means no lead. If you bring a handgun for backup, it needs to be shooting lead-free ammo.
  • Remember self-recovery equipment for you vehicles. Weather is still iffy, but I'd be prepared for some nastiness. If you have chains for your tires, bring 'em. Winches, come-alongs, shovels, and plenty of rope (for pigs, not trucks). I'll have a winch and a come-along myself, but I may not be able to get to you.
  • This would be a real good weekend to make sure you have a radio and fresh batteries for every hunter.
Dangit, is it time to go yet?

Good to hear, Chiro...

How about your partner? Is he still seeing double, or did he get some shooting in too?[/b]

Yes, he got multiple shooting days in...he's clear headed....and ready!!

That's good... we don't want any pre-made excuses for missing.

Maybe seeing a break in the weather up there...although if the rain stops we may have to deal with some fog.

Dangit... are we there yet?

T minus 2 more days and counting. It will be interesting bringing the rig into the camping area if it snows, but it will be nice spotting the black spots on the white hillsides. Wish the weather was going to cooperate a little more but I can't wait to get out there. Looking forward to seeing the clan at the Flying J. We need to fill our tags Friday or early Sat. so we can relax and tell stories around the campfire on Sat. evening. I didn't even think of the lead ammo for the handgun, thanks for the reminder.

Mark, it just occurred to me to pass along the reminder when I was shooting some new Barnes reloads in the .44 this weekend. I remembered a couple of you guys like to tote your sidearms, so figured it might be worth mention.

CorBon and Federal are loading Barnes for some of the most common handgun calibers. Not sure where else to find it.

I think the snow will stay up above the campground and main roads, although I agree... it could get interesting. From the looks of the most recent weather forecast, though, I think we're gonna slip into a little window.

Sure would be cool to have enough snow to hunt in, though.

Yeah I've been watching that also but it pretty much changes every day. Hopefully it will change for the better the closer we get to THE DAY.

Question about chains....obviously two sets would be better, but would one set be sufficient? Maybe one in front, and one on the rear..alternate corners??

I'm not real familiar with chain use, but I'd expect that if you only have two chains, I'd put them both on the rear.

Speaking of chains and such... fair warning. Just spoke to Barbara. There's a possibility that if the weather continues to deteriorate they may have to close the ranch. Final word won't come until tomorrow afternoon.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but the radar isn't giving me a lot of hope right now.

So here's the deal.

If the hunt is cancelled, they will reschedule the hunt as soon as possible. There's a regular POR next weekend (sold out already), but I think the rest of February is open. I do have the archery hunt scheduled for February 22-24, but as of now I still don't have any paid applications in hand, so that hunt is in question right now.

If you can't make the new date, of course you'll be eligible for a refund, or you can change your registration to the May hunt at no additional charge.

Any questions.

Did Barbara "hint" towards the likely outcome...based on the ranch's current conditions and the current forecast?

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed on this one. I don't mind harsh conditions, but I do understand if they think it's simply gonna be unsafe. I'll be very unhappy, though.

Chiro, she hinted that this is the first time she can remember Don ever even considering cancelling hunts.

factory or handload? as for chains that chiro asked about, definetly put both on the back!
