Hi My name is Pat,
I use to go by hogwild757 until I I had a brain fart and forgot my passwrod. Ive been posting my reports and sucess for some time now. I am from the Waianae coast of Oahu a place called Maile beach. I come from a big family that basiclly live off of food stamps and state support. But thats know big thing brada and I'm not ashamed of it. I started hunting hogs by accident when my classmate asked if I wanted to got with them cound up some cattle with his cousins and his Dad. What we thought the dogs was barking were cattle turned out to be wild pigs, and all we had for weapons was machete's for cutting down bushes when calfs and cow were in the thick stuff. Ive been hunting hogs since my teenage days and stop while I was active duty army until I got station in texas and started again then got reasigned to hawaii and pick it up agin. Ive been hunting hogs actively since returing to california in 1987. I am a certified Archery Instructor with the NFAA and help teach from time to time at Predators Archery here in Gilroy,ca Owners Curtis Campisi & Mike pierce..I'm also a certified big game scored with the "CBH" California Bowmen Hunters. I hunt mostly public land Ft hunter legget, Lake Sonoma,. If you ask me what is my dream hunt is I'd have to ask you sit down with some beer and I'll bore you with my list, then it turns out to be stories. I hunt with any equipment Arhery, rifle, knives or shot gun, and have take alot of hogs with the weapons mentioned. I just like hunting those critters and sharing the meat. I have gotten brucelosis and almost died from a hog I've taken from Ft Hunter legget TA-29 and have been even more careful while dressing out game. I have a catahoula female that I'm slowly training for hog along with a rat terrier. Hope to meet some of you some day in the field.
Aloha

Hi,

I recently went on my first hunt for wild pig in the Bradley area with a guide named Ed Roth. It was also my first time huntng anything. It was a great time. I used a 30-06 bolt action rfile with scope. The pig I shot was a 120 lb dry sow at about 50 yards. It's now sitting in my freezer as pork chops, smoked ham, and sausages. I'm looking forward to trying the meat. My friend shot a 150 lb boar from about 100 yards. Below is a picture of my pig, sorry about the blood, but it was gutted already.

I'm hooked now. My next two goals are: 1)rifle hunt on public land, 2)learn to hunt with a recurve bow.

Thanks to all for the advice on this forum.

Mike
Mike,
I would suggest you start off with a compound bow. You can get more accurate and have better kinetic energy at longer yardage sooner then you would with a recurve or tradition equipemnt. Give the people at Predators Archery at @ 408 848 3112. You get 5 Free Lesson witha new bow. and believe me you want to take those lessons. Good luck

I'm from Humboldt CA and have yet to kill my first hog. Missed one at 40 yards at Lake Sonoma this year and have had other chances. I'm a bowhunter at heart but will pick up a shotgun, rifle, or pistol to kill my dinner if I have to.

Hello-nice site.
My name is Aaron-been hunting hogs since 1979 (I'm old) I started with Dogs in 1992 and have been addicted-ever since.I Go back to Georgia(Dublin) now and it's becoming more and more of a hassle to transport my Dog (recently had to stay over in Atlanta ,one night, because they didn't approve the vet letter and they wanted a different one) I used to have acces to a friend's ranch in Parkfield(Calif) but about 9 years ago he sold that ranch and moved to Oregon.I hunted with a few different guides, here, but trying to find a place where I can hunt and use my my dog.Dog is more of a catchdog though he will track and find (just doesn't "bay" so that makes it tough out here).Anyone know anything about the Nevada Hog problem and/or guides there?
Can anyone reccommend a good guide (here or Nevada) who will let me bring my dog along?
Thanks for any help.
Great site and great pictures.
Best wishes,
Aaron B

Hi, I'm from central Florida. My buddies and I hunt hogs with dogs and most of them we tie and take alive. The few we kill we use a knife.

From Navarro County, TX. Raised in numerous places in Southern California & spent 8 years in the Marine Corps. When we left we lived in Winchester, CA and hunted deer in the Aguanga Canyon area and hogs up in the La Panza Range. In Texas I have been normally hunting hogs, deer, turkey, dove, ducks (average 15-20 minute drive) very close to the house. I hunt elk, mulies, and WT deer in Western Montana with my wife's family - they live there. I love hunting hogs as much as I love hunting deer. The last time I went I got a 300lb boar on a Saturday and a 100+ sow on Sunday. They are everywhere here. I only have 5 acres but I've had them in the backyard before as well as WT deer, bobcat, coyotes, etc. Most of my hog hunting is in Navarro, Hill, and Freestone counties (around me). We can hunt them 24/7/365 and at night, too (which is when I usually get shots). I typically use a .300 wthby mag or .30-.30 Marlin 336CS. Recently got a CA. I'll be hunting with a bow pretty in the next month or two. There is not bag limit here. With landowner permission you don't even need a license here but you wouldn't be able to take them from the field - you've got to leave them. However, with a license you can take them to the freezer. You don't need tags like in California, you just go kill as many as you want. They are a huge problem here and permission has been easy to get. Also, there are numerous public hunting places you can hunt them as well. They also just opened alligator season this year so I'm a bit excited about that, too.

Hope to learn some here, teach some here, share some here, and laugh some here. Ya'll take care.

Howdy folks, I'm new to your campfire. I live and hunt in South Texas and am literally over ran with Wild Pigs. We have Javalina but they are not the problem the hogs are. I look forward to reading and posting with you and sharing hunting experiences. Here's a few of the hundreds me and my boys have made into BBQ!

Hey bill, welcome to JHO!

What part of S. Texas are you from? I reside Houston, but have hunted in La Pryor, Cotulla, and Hebronville over the years.

Nice pics of your boys and their pigs. Feel free to post more pics and stories here in the hog forum.

UnFortunately, I have only been on one guided pig hunt in the Kings area. Enjoyed it so much I bought a Win 7mm magnum for future hunts. This was a least ten yrs ago.

Grew up in Los Angeles never really had the opportunity to hook up with anyone also interested in hunting. I would like to be able to hook up and learn with other ethical hunters interested in big game hunting. I have done a lot of reading but would like to enjoy the actual experience.

I bass fish own my own Ranger and have belonged to a local club for 10yrs.

Sounds like you're ready to jump in and get those feet wet. Join in around the campfire, and you'll find some opportunities to hunt in the near future. If nothing else comes up, the JHO/Tejon Ranch hunts are always a blast and a great opportunity to get out and learn with a great crew of knowledgeable hog hunters.

Thanks for the welcome, Speckmisser.

The Tejon hunts would be nice, I live real close, I'm in the Antelope Valley. However, I still need to learn how to dress a hog. So, I'll probably go on a couple of guided hunts first. Hopefully, the guide would be willing to talk me through dressing a hog out.
Does Tejon offer guided hunts. That would be a lot closer than driving up to Kings County.
In the time being, I am readying my rifle, I've got to take it to the range and sight in my scope and decide on the proper shell/load to use.

Hey All!

I have been visiting this site for about a year now, so I figured it was about time to post up here. I have been hunting hogs up at Lake Sonoma (probably now a thing of the past), San Louis Res., Cottonwood and FHL (all apparently when the hogs are not around). I have been fortunate enough to hook up with another JHOer and we keep having a go at em! I always have a hog tag in my pack, even when out deer hunting b/c you never know when a porker will walk out in front of you. I am looking forward to my first bow kill!

Good luck to all.

This is such a GREAT site, Im addicted..... Anyways I posted a few days ago about places to hunt near Tulare, CA and have had a lot of responses and just great people on here. Well, I have been on one hunt on private land on the back side of Lake Success and was very successfull, this was when you could buy a book of five tags......Anyways, I haven't been out since, now I really want to get back into the Hog hunting scenerio, went up to Balch Park (D8) tonight scouting a few areas for the Deer bow opener next weekend and on the way home I came through Yokohl valley and ran up on a Posse of Pigs it was a sight one huge bore, nice size sow and many meat piggies and put pig fever in my blood. The pigs were on private land so I just sat in the truck stroking my Tikka .270 crying in front of my two boys and wife. Anyways, I don't care how hard it is to get a pig on BLM land I'm going to get one here soon, even if I have to fight through all the A zoners. Coalinga here I come.

Hello fellow hog hunters, I'm from So Cal born and raised my name is Jaime been hog hunting since 99 although i got my first porker on a deer hunt in texas back in 92 I own my passion of hunting to my uncle who would pull me out of school early just to go hunting. I normaly hunt pigs in central cali around Coalinga or Paso Robles. No one really taught me how to hunt hogs I just kinda started figuering things out on my own after many attempts. I hunt with a 300 wsm A bolt stainless stalker with 180 grain fail safe bullets. Although winchester stoped making them now I think im changing over to the triple shock bullets. I just started shooting a bow and cant wait to stick me a hog sometime.

Hi Everyone. Been 'ghosting' this site for some time now . . . rather not say how long
<

Finally started hunting hogs and I figure I might have something to contribute, so I decided to join. I live in San Francisco (for all it's liberal reputation, it is still a great place to live). I'm lucky enough to have access to a private mini-ranch I can hunt anytime, although at 180 acres it is more miss than hit.

I use a 25-06 with Federal Premium ammo - I push either 115 grain trophy bonded bearclaws or 100 grain barnes. Shot 3 hogs in the past 2 years; 2 boars at 200 and 170 lbs, and a 180 lb sow.

I must say this is a tremendously informative site with lots of good folks and I am happy to have finally joined.

opps, i guess i never formally introduced myself. my name is cliff. i live in the east bay of the san francisco area. i just recently picked up bow hunting AND started chasing pigs religiously. typically, i have fantastic rookie outings, but the porkies have been outwitting me ever since. i have attached a pic of me and my new mexico elk. drew on the first try, got him on opening morning. my brother also scored the following morning. packing out two elk in two days, KILLS!

here is the deal; i vowed never to use a rifle to hunt, until i harvest with my bow. i have hunting lake sonoma plenty. finally ran across a group of magician hogs yesterday, (they disappeared), and i have hunted a private plot near tejon. looks good, they have a peach orchard that draw them in. buddy killed two there, i have not scored. in a few weeks i will travel to a ranch near san antonio, with my bro. he scored with two hog there a few weeks ago, and really wants me to go. i have also sent a deposit to run after some of chopper's hogs. figure i need some prime hunting to finish this crazy vow i took.

thanks for putting together such a great informative site.

bow: mathews switchback XT
rifle1: hand me down, winchester 30.06 - the tackdriver
rifle2: weatherby .257 magnum.

I hunt Pigs here on public land on Oahu, HI, and also when I go visit family on the Big Island.
I use a Marlin 336 30-30 for pig, with quick release scope mounts for when hunting in brush.
My first trip was on Big island with some friends in 2007.
Dream Hog hunt is being able to take my dad hunting and get him a nice tusked Boar.

I was born in Medford Oregon , and moved down to Sonoma County back in 1981. I hunted pigs all over the coast area back then. Joined up in the Army and then moved back east. I am now back in California and live in the northern part of Sacramento County, I have not been pig hunting in over 9 years. But now I am diving back in. I love to hunt and have a passion for it. I am actively trying to get back in to the sport and meet people who love it as much as I do. 30.06 180
