Brittany for me guys. My Brit forgot more about hunting the day after he was born than we will ever now! Im sure some of the other Versatile breeds with good pedigrees are the same way.

I like to hunt over fields where others have previously hunted, it makes the challenge and the dog work a bit harder. The shorthairs have a track and trail ability they can find and stop the runners and locate the holdover birds the others left behind. I train them all, the English Pointer is fantastic and combine the two (GSP and EP) in a brace makes a hard combination to beat. Overall I would go with the GSP.

GSP so far. I haven't yet seen what other dogs can do. My GSP is 10 mos old and he was pointing into a bush of 5 baby kittens.

I've hunted behind almost every pointing breed, and for California hunting, nothing beats a GSP (especially mine, but I am prejudiced)

I have owned both GSP and Vizsla, Have hunted behind Britneys and english pointers.I gotta say these dogs are born to hunt.Natural pointers and retrivers. The difference I've seen in there abilities is more to do with thier owners than them.If you hunt regularly the dog will be on it's game.(pun intended)

I am new this Forum but have hunted birds for quite a few years. All bird dogs have their own special traits and quirks. I personally hunt with an English Setter but have hunted over other dogs. My opinion is that the most versitile dog is the Large Munsterlander. I have personally hunted geese in the a.m. and taken them pointing pheasants in the afternoon. Even with geese flying overhead, it didn't seem to bother or distract the dog from the task that she was on.

O.K. O.K. If you want a real hunting dog, get your self a POINTING LABRADOR RETRIEVER. I think I'll get out of here before one of you throw a brick through my computer.

P.S. The best pointing dogs I've ever hunted over were English.
The pointing labrador is not a real lab in my opion they are flushers and retrievers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Brittany is a show-off with his stylish point....and he knows it!

There is good reason why the Brittany has been rated as one of the top pointing breeds in this poll.

The Brittany is no longer (and properly so) considerd to be a spaniel.....simply put the breed is: "Brittany"

I believe that hunting the high desert for quail that the GSP is a hardy, tenacious, and worthy pointer who is certainly up to the task of covering alot of ground full of cactus and rattle snakes. It amazes me how much stamina the GSP has!

My Grandfather (who introduced me to upland hunting) would go afield with a side-by-side over his Irish Setter. He certainly had some fine pointers.

One of my favorite pointing breeds, which I am sorry to say, wasn't included in the poll, is the Llewellin Setter.

Of course it is up to the individual dog's skill and personality as well as that of the Pointer's owner.

I think that all breeds of pointers greatly contribute to the sport of upland hunting in their own right!

hoytrdye, we hunt mostly in the Sacramento Valley and up north out of the Chico area. The Griffs are not from a "kennel" their parents are from Butte Views Samuel Adams in Colusa and Uplands Wolf Gang Stevens Point Wisconsin.
