Greetings All,

I'm from San Diego and learned to hunt dove, quail, deer and rabbits with my Mom and Dad in Imperial Valley and what is now part of Anza Borrego State Park. My Mom was just about as good a shot as my Dad and both were County and State Champions in archery. I vividly remember my Dad's teaching the value of accuracy…bolt action 22…he would give me three shells…off I’d go. If I returned with a dead animal, I would get three more shells. If I ran out, no more shooting for the remainder of the trip. More than once I returned with a dead frog… shot at point blank range… at the cattle trough.

I hunt only California upland anymore, but have in the past hunted up to black bear, using rifle, pistol, shotgun and bow. I still have my Bear Alaskan four-wheel compound and when hunting upland, I always take my 44-year-old Model 870 as a backup. I lusted after an O/U for years and finally got a Browning 525 a few years ago. After some practice with the O/U, I can consistently break all the clays at 5-stand …… sometimes even before they hit the ground!

My dream upland hunt happens every September 1st…Dove in the Valley with my hunting partner (he and I first hunted together 48 years ago).

I live in Carlsbad, CA (north San Diego).

I hunt with 2 brother Springers, "Dice" and "Domino", now 18 months old.

NEED ACCESS TO QUAIL PROPERTY NEAR SAN DIEGO!

2005:
Dove - opener in Yuma, couple of other dove hunts in Imperial Valley
Quail in Paso Robles, Landcaster, and Imperial Valley
Pheasant north of Sacramento (2 trips, 6 days), and one day in Imperial Valley
Snow geese (limits) - Sacramento(Colusa) (twice) plus a couple of snows while duck hunting at Wister.
Ducks - Wister (Salton Sea), Kern, and San Jacinto refuges

Springer's total counts for 2005 for wild birds: 17 roosters, 35 quail, 20 dove, 10 snow geese, 20 ducks.

Guns: Browning O/U Citori Millenium (425) for pure upland. Browning O/U Citori Lightning (3") for waterfowl or mixed pheasant/waterfowl. I've gone to O/U for everything.

Hello to all JHO members.

Born in Bakersfield, raised in Delano. Now live in Palmdale. Hunt quail and some dove when time allows. Hunt the A.V., Ballinger Cyn., mostly Kern and Tulare county since i have roots there. Got my three boys to hunt along side my two labs so my hands are full. Guns range from Berreta AL390, Rem wingmaster 870, Browning B80, Mossberg youth 20ga. Great times to be had when dove/quail season open. Hope my kids pass it on to theirs.

Greetings,

I am from Southern California for the most part and hail from Southern Riverside county for last 10 years. I first hunted when I was a kid licing in New Mexico and my Pa took me quail, rabbit and Coyote hunting with him. I still remember walking the desert. Came to California when I was 7 and that was the end of it.

Took up the passion again a couple years ago and picked up a GSP, spent the time and money and he didn't work out as hunting dog so is now just a pet. I got another GSP, female this time who turned out to be wonderful on birds. She's my oldest daughters (15) dog really :) I hunted a couple times last season with the newly trained dog and my daughter in the Perris area.

This year we are lining up all the cool places to go and can't wait to get back out there.

I shoot an older Winchest 12 semi. Looking for a good 20sxs though. We just bought my daughter her first gun, a Remington 20g pump. We pick it up this Saturday. She is pretty excited.

My dream upland hunt would be going to the Dakotas for Pheasant. Someday :)

Hi I'm Mountainbird388. I live in Santa Paula Ca. I hunt Los Padres Forest for Valley and Mountain Quail. I hunt the Sierras for Chukar. I use either a Beretta 686 in 12ga and the same in a 20ga. I do a lot of Deer hunting also. I've been hunting for about 30 years. My dad used to take me out rabbit hunting and I would tag along on his deer hunts. I'm looking forward to geeting out and knoking down some chukar this year

Hello everyone.

I did not grow up in a hunting family. But in Jr High I went with a friend and his family dove hunting in Southern Utah. I really liked it so I saved up for a Smith&Wesson 12ga. Though I lived in LA folks had property in Bear Valley Springs. I joined their Sportsmans Club and those old guys taught me how to hunt over dogs over planted pheasants at a club near Tehachapi, loved it.

When I turned 16 I went searching for wild quail and I found them in the hills around Tehachapi. Hunted Chukar in the El Paso mountains too. Went to NorCal for college and beer drinking and did little hunting mostly Steelhead fishing.
Blew up the barrel on that S&W 12ga hunting mountain Quail in the snow near Quincy, some snow got in the barrel and when the birds broke the barrel blasted apart.

Years later I moved back to SoCal and while in Law School I picked up the Rem 870 12ga I have now. SHot a few quail in the LPNF above Ojai.

Got the fire heavy again like I did as a teen. I have hunted the LPNF and Carrizo Plain area and Cuyama. Would like a better shotgun I'll have to read that forum. Someday need a dog too.

My dream upland hunt would be wild pheasants in SD.

Hi everyone. I grew up in south Georgia. Fished a lot anywhere I could. I got my first gun when I was 8. Hunted squirrels, birds, racoons, opossum, and a lot of other things. I think that ducks, dove, and geese are my favorites. I never did a whole lot of deer hunting, some hog hunting. Ive been in Ga, SC, OH, and now hte LA area. I went up to the Sequoia area in Tulare hunting quail during the mountain quail season that started earlier. Ive been in LA for about 4 years now and am just starting to hunt again. I got a biscuit eater dog, standard schnauzer, that sits around the house. He likes to go out but he cant hunt anything but table scraps. Beretta shotguns have a favor with me, I like them.

Maybe Ill see one of you guys hunting one day, sounds like it gets a lot of pressure out here. Im used to not seeing anyone else all day. In the swamp you might not ever see anyone.

Hey Guys,

Seein' any? Shootin' any?? Gettin' any???

I've check out the 'site the past couple of years and finally dicided to get in.

I'm a native Californian born and raised in the So. Bay.

My first hunting experience was with my father and older brother when we were in our early teens. We were hunting rabbits in Mexico out in the country side. I guess from that point on I was hooked.

I started hunting upland game in the late '80's. At my first dove opener in Blythe I used a borrowed Remington (model???) semi-auto on a couple of outings and had some frustrations because it was not cycling right. It took awhile, but I managed a limit using the auto-loader as a single shot. Nearby, I remember a guy folding dove after dove using an over and under. When I got home, I checked a few O/Us and knew it would be good fit. It was about Xmas time, so you can guess what I wished for...a new 12ga. Citori (Thanks Santa!!!!).

I've bagged some Chukar in the Red Mountain area, but never near any limits. The biggest problem is all my hunting buddies don't want anything to to with the challenge. I've been out twice this season. Jumped one covey of chukar, but no cigar. I'll be back!!!!

My dream is to grow older and have my son take me hunting.

Hello everyone,
Live in Sacramento. Came from Missoula Montana (God's Country) I was taught to hunt be my father when I was 15. Did not get to hunt much but guided fly fishermen down the Clark Fork and the Bitteroot rivers in Montana when I was 18-19 years old. My passions are waterfowl, upland and fly fishing. Have been in california for 10 years now. Got back into hunting upland and waterfowl three years ago when I my German shorthair pup and was introduced to NAVHDA. My favirote shotgun is a CZ woodcock 28ga. That I use for all my feathered pursuits. My dream hunts would be a cast and blast in Idaho for grouse, chukar, and brown trout. My second dream hunt would to go for 30 days of hunting starting in canada for grouse, ducks, and geese. Then into South Dakota for pheasants and huns. Next stop would to Texas and Arizona for all three species of quail. That why they call them dream hunts!

Live well and Hunt Safe!!

Hello all.

I live in Orange County but grew up in San Fernando Valley. I hunt the CRIT and other areas of AZ, as well as Carrizo Plains and the eastern sierras, El Paso mountains and Red Mountain.
I shoot a berretta 686 and a turkish Mossberg O/U.
I learned to hunt upland and was hooked for life in 1974, when rabbit hunting in the Andes with my dad and brothers. We came across a young guy and his lab/pointer mix and learned to hunt Tinamou (perdiz) over a dog at 11000 ft.
My two full time partners are a Pointer and a Brittany trained by Big Carl Porter.
A dream hunt would be to go to another state with my dogs and friends and hunt wild pheasant, huns and quail.
Lastly, I really enjoy reading the stories and advice of fellow gentlemen hunters.

Hello,

I started hunting 10 years ago.
I live near Sacramento, CA. I mostly hunt pheasant and ducks north of Sacramento.
I want to try and hunt quail and chukar but my normal hunting buddies don't want to put in that kind of effort.
I use a Beretta AL390 for waterfowl and a new last year Beretta Ultralight 12ga for the uplands.

My dream hunt would be to get some Sharptail grouse and huns in the midwest.

Hello, my name is Fred and I am pretty new to upland hunting. Even though I've always like to go hunting before but I was too busy with school and jobs. Now I am getting older, married and more setled down. I like to hunt chukars, quails and some doves. most of the time I go out to the inland empire valley which my friends showed me but I have not shot many birds because I am still new and trying to learn the game. For the sport, I recently bought a new Browning Cynergy field 28", 12 gauge. I also shoot a little of skeets and such for practice. My dream hunt should be more upland birds. I only hunted 2 times last year and 2 times so far this year... I'd like to get out more when time permits.

Hello All,
Let's see I grew in Pennsylvania. I had alot of exposure to wilderness and animals but never hunted there. The military brought me out here and I guess I never left.
I can't remember when I first started hunting out here must of been around 1990. Hunted doves in Rancho Cucamunga.I've hunted anywhere from the Cajon pass to the IV and parts in between. I do like all kinds of hunting but hunting birds has to be my favorite, maybe it's not just the hunt but being out there makes it worth while. I ususally go evevy wekend somewhere, even if I don't go hunting so to speak just exploring a new area is just as fun. I use a 20 gauge Remington 870 mostly and have the 12(Winchester 1300) mostly for turkey when I go. I've been trying to get into the varmint thing, had my .17 for a little while and it's all sighted in and ready to go. Myself and others are always willing to go out, give a holler if you like...Have a great weekend out there....

Hi Everybody, I'm new here and writing my breif history. I am 73 years old and live in Eastern Washington. My Birddog Tony, a Brittany and I do most of our upland bird hunting on the Washington Palouse. It is a farm area and has nice populations of Valley Quail, Hungarian Pats. and Pheasant. Those are the 3 I hunt the most. There is some Chukar hunting available but I don't go after them much.

The Palouse is very hilly and you need to go into training to get your legs in shape for the climbing. Well, at least I do. I shot a 20 gauge on most everything. I love Trap Shooting and do it as much as possible. These old eyes make ahooting Skeet and Sporting Clays a thing of the past. For vision impairments just don't permit it. I also do a lot of Reloading of Shotshells and have done that for over 40 years.

That is about it and I will be posting as time goes on.

Hi, been monitoring this form for a while and enjoy the discussions. Started hunting with my Dad over 40 years ago. I use to help him with his shorthairs in the 60's and 70's when he ran them in field trails. Unfortunately no dogs any more. Enjoy shooting a 20 ga browning A-5, or a 12 ga superposed. Also enjoy shooting my model 12s in all gauges. Havn't been doing to much hunting the last several years due to work and passing of my Father. However it's in the blood and time to get back into it. I'll continue monitoring the discussions, and who knows, might see you out in the field this coming season.
